The Yoshijima House

Texts by Tadao Yoshijima, Teiji Itoh, Chûjiro Hachino, Ryōo Hata, Josep Melo I Valls & Joan Melo Ballester

This building itself is culture; Yoshijima can pride itself on being a place of cultural creation. It was the building itself, not what was displayed within it, that impressed a global architectural giant. It was a residence; there was no need to transform it into a museum displaying a collection of treasures. What moved Charles Moore (1925–1993)? He has never revealed it to us, but there is no doubt that, deep down, he discovered in Yoshijima a value that transcends eras and goes beyond modernist ideology. As Yukio Futugawa (1932–2013) is fond of saying, this house is one of the classics, on par with the Parthenon in Greece.
